The interview was with Karen Sherr – Musical Minis , child psychologist, and Neil Sinclair – father of three, ex royal engineer commando and author of ‘Commando Dad’ parenting books series.
The following is the basic points covered in the interview.
The presenter asked if fathers should indulge in ‘baby talk’ with their children?
Karen replied, ‘It’s important for parents to do what they are comfortable with. Mothers may coo more because fathers feel self-conscious. The first sounds a baby makes are syllables, mah, dah, bah, when an adult repeats it back to them it is a form of communication with the child and an excellent way of bonding them. It is communicating with the child in a way they can understand, so they know they are doing something right.’
Neil said, ‘I looked at Karen’s website and think what she does with the music is fantastic.’ Neil said he used to sign to his children when they were very young.
Karen said, ‘Keep the communication going with words rather than just signs; other adults don’t know what your child is signing and words are the most important form of communication. You can sign but you must say the words at the same time.’
The presenter asked Karen if she had any advice for dads, ‘Just talk to your children in whatever way you are comfortable with. Also look at your tone. Maybe speak more slowly. As long as you are happy and are taking turns with the child to ‘speak’ and ‘reply, it all helps.’
The presenter said, what about singing? Karen replied, ‘Sing all day! Singing is how you build up language in a fun way. Fun for both children and adults.’
Neil noted that, ‘Kids are very forgiving, they don’t mind if you don’t’ have a good voice!’
